Lynn Weiss's death coincided with the desire of the Political
Science Department to add a student focus to the Lindsay Rogers Room,
which houses the Lindsay Rogers book collection. In consultation with
Lynn Weiss's family, Dr. Wayne Wilcox, former Chair of the Department
of Political Science, proposed that a book collection honoring Lynn
Weiss would provide such a focus. The Lynn Weiss Memorial Collection
was made possible by contributions to an endowment fund from Lynn's
family, friends, fellow students, and Columbia faculty members.
Initially, the basic collection on international relations was located
in the Lindsay Rogers Common Room. It now resides in the Lynn Weiss
Resource Room.
In 1981, at the urging of the University
Provost, the Collection was made a part of the University Libraries,
with some volumes of the Collection put on reserve in the Lehman
Library and others shelved in the general holdings of the university.
All bear the "Lynn Weiss Memorial Collection" nameplate.
Today,
the Collection contains over 600 volumes drawn from all divisions in
political science although its main concentrations are in international
relations and comparative politics. The Collection includes a wide
selection of political science classics as well as an extensive range
of more recent publications, many of which appear on the field survey
syllabi and on the reading lists for Ph.D. qualifying exams. The
Collection is thus an excellent resource for students studying for
qualifying exams. The Collection is intended primarily as a resource
for graduate students specializing in international relations, but it
is available to all Department faculty and students. The Collection is
housed in the Lynn Weiss Resource Room, 742 International Affairs Building, which is managed by Adriana Lins de Albuquerque,
the Lynn Weiss Fellow for 2007-2008. The Room is open from 12:30 to
3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and by request to Ms. Sanchez at
other times.
Graduate students may borrow books from the collection for up to one month.
The Collection is stewarded by Professor Jack Snyder; the Department Administrator; and the Lynn Weiss Fellow. Contact Adriana Lins de Albuquerque for further information about the Collection and to recommend new acquisitions.
A catalogue of the Collection's holdings is coming soon.
