| Maguire Translation of 'Demons' Published |
 |
Robert Maguire's translation of Dostoevsky's Demons has been published by Penguin Classics UK. The book, Professor Maguire's final work in a translation career that included Bely's Petersburg and Gogol's Dead Souls among numerous other works of Russian and Polish literature, also bears the imprint of several of Maguire's Columbia colleagues: the Introduction is by Robert Belknap, and the translation is edited, with commentary and notes, by Ron Meyer, who adds: "[Alumni] Deborah Martinsen and Olga Meerson supplied the ammunition I needed to
persuade Penguin to publish the work under the title "Demons" (Bob [Maguire]'s choice) rather than "Devils." Irina Reyfman's Ritualized Violence Russian Style helped me out on more than one occasion. Many others,
including students from my translation classes, helped in ways that
would surprise even them."
The
U.S. edition is scheduled to be released in June.
