Hyman Grossbard
| Hyman Grossbard, a leading
social work educator and professor emeritus at Columbia University's School
of Social Work, died on September 20, 1999 following complications from
a bone fracture. He lived in Canton, MA, and is survived by his wife,
Sophie Maroz Grossbard, a 1958 graduate of CUSSW.
Professor Grossbard joined the social work faculty in 1952 and was appointed a full professor in 1967. He was named professor emeritus at the time of his retirement in 1973 and continued his teaching as a special lecturer for many years at Columbia. During his professional career he was a clinical director of the Hawthorne Cedar Knolls School and a member of many social agency advisory boards. He also served as an examiner for the New York City Board of Education in the placement of candidates in school social casework and supervisory positions. He published numerous articles on the problems of delinquency, residential treatment centers and other issues concerning the welfare of youth. Professor Grossbard earned his rabbinical degree from Yeshiva of Tels in Lithuania and his B.S. degree from Columbia University�s Teachers College. He graduated from the School of Social Work in 1937. The Grossbard family and friends established the Grossbard Scholarship and the Hyman and Sophie Grossbard Lectureship in Clinical Social Work Practice at the School.
