Rita A. Ortiz
| Rita A. Ortiz, former assistant
professor at the Columbia University School of Social Work and a 1947 CUSSW
graduate, died on November 15, l999 at St Luke�s Hospital in New York City
after a brief illness. She established the Agustin Gonzalez Memorial Scholarship
in 1989 in memory of her brother, a 1956 graduate of the School.
Mr. Gonzalez was the founder and national director of the Puerto Rican
Family Institute.
Born in San German, Puerto Rico, Professor Ortiz also attended the University of Puerto Rico School of Social Work and the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico. She was director of the Neighborhood Youth Corps program during the anti-poverty program in the 1960�s ,financed by the Office of Economic Opportunity and the City of New York for the Lower East Side�s New York Mobilization for Youth. A co-founder with her brother of the Puerto Rican Family Institute, she was a board member of ASPIRA and many Hispanic and community groups and worked with the Community Service Society, St. Vincent�s Hospital, Head Start and the Bureau of Child Welfare among others. Professor Ortiz was an active member of the National Conference of Social Work, the International Conference of Social Work and was member of numerous Columbia�s School of Social Work Alumni Association program committees. One of the earliest Hispanic members of the Social Work faculty, Professor Ortiz was committed to providing graduate education for qualified students who would serve the needs of Puerto Rican and related populations. The Gonzalez Scholarship has already benefited 17 graduate students since its inception. Funeral services were held at Riverside Church on November 17. Contributions may be sent in Professor Ortiz�s memory to the Gonzalez Scholarship Fund at the Columbia University School of Social Work. |
