Virginia Woolf: scanned images, texts, and editions

This page (a work in progress), and the five separate pages linked to it, contain scanned images of the early editions of all the books and pamphlets by Virginia Woolf that were published in her lifetime, together with some additional scanned material and notes on scholarly editions (editions that include a textual apparatus) and recent inexpensive editions that use edited texts.

The five separate pages devote special attention to Jacob's Room, Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, The Waves, and Flush.

Most of the scans linked on this page were made by me, and are therefore substandard compared with professionally-made scans, but they seem to be better than nothing. Especially for the earlier titles, I have used some scans that were not made by me, but derive partly or wholly from online sources; those sources are noted below.

Credit where credit is due: This work was generously funded by the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. The Virginia Woolf Literary Estate has graciously granted permission to post images of material that is still under copyright in the United Kingdom.

Orlando (1928)

Scanned images of an uncorrected set of proofs sent to Harcourt, Brace of Orlando (1928) (from the Columbia University Library). Note that Virginia or Leonard Woolf removed the leaf with the list of illustrations (pp. 13-14) before sending these proofs. These proofs were discovered too late to be recorded in Suzanne Raitt and Ian Blyth's 2018 Cambidge edition. A set of corrected proofs also sent to Harcourt, Brace is in the Smith College Library.

The Hogarth Press first trade edition of A Room of One's Own (1929).

The Harcourt, Brace first regular American edition of A Room of One's Own (1929).

The Hogarth Press revised second impression of A Room of One's Own (1929). This replaces "I like their subtlety" with "I like their completeness" on page 168, line 1.

The texts of the Hogarth edition require these obvious emendations, recorded by Stuart N. Clarke in his and David Bradshaw's 2015 Shakespeare Head Press edition:

A possible emendation occurs on page 124, 8 lines up, for "women in fiction" read "woman in fiction" (as in the American edition). The American edition has what seem to be mistaken variants: page 90, line 2, Hogarth "mind was tuned", Harcourt "mind was turned";  page 157, line 13, Hogarth "art of creation", Harcourt "act of creation".

The slightly different British and American printed texts published in 1941 (and all editions derived from them) have no textual authority, having been supervised by Leonard Woolf, not the author. The only edition based directly on the authorial typescript is Mark Hussey's 2001 edition in the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Virginia Woolf.
