Pete in Vilar, Portugal, in 1951 with two of the "pavias", his first cousins Luzia and Madalena de Oliveira Santos, daughters of Daniel's brother Francisco. It'a a running joke in the family to call the girls pavias because they are "thin as a rail" (a pavia is a long stick for lighting street lamps).
