The
most important thing to notice on this map is that the "Grand Shrine of
Ise" is in fact two shrines, around each of which cluster dozens of affiliated
sub-shrines. Although the Inner Shrine, dedicated to the sun goddess, is
the higher in prestige, the Outer Shrine is every bit its equal in scale
and complexity. By road, the two shrines are about two miles apart, and
around each one grew separate cities, Uji and Yamada, to provide lodging
and entertainment for pilgrims. Nearby just off the shore of Ise Bay are
the so-called "Wedded Rocks," a common first stop for a traditional pilgrim.
