This
view of a local shrine festival, of a sort repeated every year in every
corner of Japan, is also basically a form of ritual renewal. Here the god
of the shrine has been transferred to a small portable shrine, and is being
carried through the streets by the neighborhood youth. After resting in
a special location for several days, it will be returned to its regular
shrine building.
