Adrenal gland, right, adrenalectomy
CLINICAL INFORMATION:
Right adrenal mass.
GROSS DESCRIPTION:
The specimen is received unfixed in a container labeled with the patient's name and "Right Adrenal Mass." It contains a previously cut adrenal gland measuring 7.5 x 4.5 x 2 cm which weighs 27.1 g. The cut section reveals a tan-brown focally hemorrhagic mass measuring 3 x 3 x 1.5 cm and showing cystic degeneration in its center. The surrounding rim of normal adrenal is golden yellow, unremarkable. The adrenal is inked black and submitted entirely in 10 cassettes labeled A1-A10. aft 8/25/2006 aft
MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION:
The tumor has a central area of scarring with hemosiderin deposition. The tumor cells are positive for synaptophysin and chromogranin. They are negative for inhibin and Melan-A. The histologic findings along with the immunohistochemical profile are those of pheochromocytoma.
DIAGNOSIS(ES):
Adrenal gland, right, adrenalectomy:
1. Pheochromocytoma (3.0 cm).
2. Background adrenal, histologically unremarkable.
