Ethylene Glycol Toxicity

• Phase 1 (Minutes – 12 hours):  CNS

• • inebriation, nystagmus, paralysis, seizures and coma.
  • Nausea and vomiting may also occur.
  • Calcium oxalate crystals may be present in urine.

• Phase 2 (12-24 hours ):  Cardiopulmonary

• • tachycardia and hypertension. 
  • anion gap metabolic acidosis with compensatory hyperventilation.
  • HF and ARDS

• Phase 3 (>24 hours):  Renal

• • acute tubular necrosis and renal failure.
  • Oliguria, hematuria, and proteinuria.
