Kanadehon Chûshingura

"The Treasury of Loyal Retainers"

Written by Takeda Izumo, Namiki Senryû and Miyoshi Shôraku

The puppet play with joruri text that opened in Osaka in the autumn of 1748, entitled Kanadehon Chushingura, or "A Kana Primer for the Treasury of Loyal Retainers," was an epochal turning point in the conversion of the Ako Incident of 1701-03 and the story of the revenge of the 47 Ronin into Japan's national legend.  Within months, the play had been staged on the kabuki stage as well, and was performed in Edo as well as the Kyoto-Osaka area where it originated.
