The
Yumedono is an octagonal building, an unusual form in Japanese Buddhism.
It has a general correspondence in the native Japanese tradition to the
round domes which were used as imperial tombs. The conjecture that this
memorial is thus a sort of symbolic mausoleum is given further support
by the ornament on the top of the roof, which is in the traditional shape
of a container for relics.
