The same scholar who proposed the angry ghost theory of the Yumedono Kannon claims that something similar is involved in the Middle Gate. The middle pillar, he argues, is consciously intended as an obstruction. It is not to keep anyone out, however, but rather to pen someone in. That someone is none other than the angry spirit of Prince Shôtoku. But as before, doubts remain: while native Shinto tradition was rich in avenging spirits, it is hard to find much reason for Prince Shôtoku’s alleged anger.
