more persuasive explanation is aesthetic rather than religious, drawing
attention to the fact that the Middle Gate itself lies off-center within
the entire front façade. It appears that a normal three-bay gate
has been extended to four by adding one bay on the left. This thereby shifts
the center of the gate slightly to the left.
