The
reason for the shift to the left, the argument continues, is to balance
the asymmetry of the two buildings inside. If one enters through the left
of the two open bays, in other words, a slight visual favor is given to
the narrow pagoda over the wide Golden Hall to the right. The Japanese
are thus merely being consistent in their preference for subtle indirection
over the strict symmetry of continental Buddhism.
