Columbia University Computing History

Some of the most significant events in the history of digital computers took place at Columbia University. For many decades Columbia stood at the forefront of computing technology. Scholars and students wishing to learn more about Columbia's long and impressive history in the world of computing need look no further than the Columbia University Computing History web site.

This personal site was created by CUIT staff member Frank da Cruz, who maintains and updates the site as new information comes to light. The detailed chronology begins in 1879, when Herman Hollerith received his engineering degree from Columbia and went on to found what eventually became IBM. One of the latest entries, in August 2005, marks the 50th anniversary of Columbia's first computer that was available for general use by Columbia researchers and courses.
