Configure Dial-up Networking

  1. Click Start, then click Control Panel, then double-click Network Connections.
  2. Click Create a new connection under Network Tasks to start the New Connection Wizard.
  3. Select Connect to the Internet and then click Next.
  4. Select Set up my connection manually and then click Next.
  5. Select Connect using a dial-up modem and then click Next.
  6. Type Columbia A as your ISP name and then click Next.
  7. Type 1 212 854-3100 as the phone number and then click Next.
  8. Be sure that you have unchecked the option use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer. Important: Do not enter your user ID (User name) and password at this screen.
  9. Click Next. If you would like to add a shortcut on the desktop, select the option Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop. Click Finish.

Test Your Connection


Click Start, Connect To and then select Columbia A or double-click the Columbia A shortcut on your desktop.

Enter your User name (CUIT account ID)---do not include "@columbia.edu"---and password at the login screen and then click Dial. You will see a pop-up window indicating that your modem is dialing and connecting. To disconnect, exit from each of the network programs you started. Double-click the terminal icon and then click Disconnect on the Columbia A Status window to end your connection to Columbia A.

Configuring DHCP


The default configuration that comes with the Operating Systems is the correct configuration for DHCP. To check this, go to Start then Settings then Control Panel. Select Network, right-click on Local Area Connection and then select Properties. Select TCP/IP protocol and select Properties. Verify that under the General tab, Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected.
