10,000 more jobs to go

No matter what they say, Brenda Carrington, an employee for a Health Department clinic in Morrisania, insists her job is in danger

"People are talking," she said. "They don't want to lose their jobs. You have to find another way."

The Health Department eliminated almost 1,000 workers last year. Though the administration plans to abolish only 100 jobs this time, Carrington said workers remain nervous.

"It's bad," she said. "When they had the first layoffs, we felt the effect."

Carrington, who supports four children, said the real loser will be the public, especially low-income clients who might have to travel farther for health care.

"If we lose our jobs, you don't get the services," she said.
