ELDERLY

ELDERLY

No major change

"We're very fortunate that the mayor has made services to the elderly a priority," said Helene Wolff, of the city's Department for the Aging.

There are nearly 200,000 people over age 60 in the borough, according to the department, and 21 nonprofit agencies under contract to deliver meals to about 3500 people, Wolff said.

"I really don't see anything in the mayor's plan that will harm the elderly," said an official from Meals on Wheels, at 2157 Holland Avenue.

Home care to the elderly infirm will also be maintained, and the city's 335 senior centers will remain open.

"These are the people who need our services the most," Wolff said. The agency has fared well under Giuliani, having had its budget increased by $3 million.
