LIBRARIES

No major changes

Funding for libraries remains secure, according to Mary Berman, Central Bronx's regional librarian..

"At this point we are going to be maintaining service," she said from her office on East 186th Street. "We've been able to stay open six days a week and we've maintained staff."

Berman said that a hiring freeze and a small book-buying budget are her biggest worries. She said in her 25 years of service she has never seen libraries so busy and she hopes services will not be spread thin.

"There are no places to sit," she said. "The kids are sitting on the floor."

As for the future, Berman said, "We're keeping our fingers crossed."
