Hey everyone,

Do you have gripes about Columbia? Have suggestions on what we can do
to make it better? Come to our CC08 Open Mic Night! Michelle and I
will be in Schapiro Lounge tonight to talk and serve you a delicious
dinner catered by Cafe Swish. Whether or not you've got complaints,
definitely stop by for dinner.

Also enter the Urban 08 lottery for tickets to see a show at the
Metropolitan Opera House. Win two tickets to see the romantic opera
"La Traviata" in honor of Valentine's Day, with your honey or with a
friend.

1. URBAN 08: "La Traviata" at the Metropolitan Opera House
THURS Feb. 22nd 7pm

Here is your chance to not only go to the famous Metropolitan Opera
House, but to see the wild and unlikely story, "La Traviata." Make a
night of it with a (special) friend. Enter your name to the Urban 08
lottery for a chance to win two tickets (for yourself and a CC08

3. Make someone besides your boyfriend/girlfriend smile this
Valentine's Day! Join CCSC 08 as we make homemade Valentines
(Tuesday in Broadway from 9 to 10 pm)and deliver them to elderly residents at a
nearby retirement home (Wednesday 2/14 4:30 to 5:30). If you would

5. THANK-A-THON
Tuesday, February 13th
Join friends and classmates for this annual event--an opportunity for
you to phone CC and SEAS alumni to say THANK YOU for your support to
Columbia.  That's it--simple and sweet.  We'll supply the pizza
(kosher, too), snacks and beverages--you supply the "thanks."  Stop in
anytime between the hours of 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM.  We'll be there.

6. FOOTSTEPS
is an organization aimed at educating students on the
Millenium Development Goals and encouraging activism in global
development issues.  This non-profit organization is headquartered in
Atlanta and wants to launch a chapter at Columbia.  Included is more
information on the organization and our first informational meeting,
Friday Feb.16, 5-6pm in 633 Mudd.

7. Final CCSC Candidate Information Session
TUESDAY (February 13th) at 10pm in McBain Lounge

Do you have great ideas on how to make Columbia a better place? Would
you want to bring those ideas to life? Then join the Columbia College
Student Council! Elections are quickly approaching, and we want YOU to
run. In addition, if you choose to run, CCSC will now help finance
your campaign.

What should I do? Come to any one of the following three information sessions:

Wednesday, February 7th at 10pm--ALREADY HAPPENED

Sunday, Feburary 11th at 9pm--ALREADY HAPPENED

Tuesday, February 13th at 10pm--MCBAIN LOUNGE


There, you will find out more about what it takes to be on CCSC, and
how you can run. After attending this meeting, you may submit your
candidate and party identification forms anytime between February 10th
to February 19th. Forms and an elections calendar are now available at
www.columbia.edu/cu/ccsc/elections .

What can I run for?

For the classes of 2008, 2009, and 2010:

Class Representatives (3 per class)

For all Columbia College students (except seniors, of course):
Student Body President
School-Wide Vice Presidents for Funding, Campus Life, Policy, and

Pre-professional, Scholars, and Fellows Representative

8. "Doctor in the House"
Monday, February 26
This popular annual program features Columbia College and School of
Engineering and Applied Science alumni who have pursued a career in
medicine. A panel presentation and the reception which follows offer
students an opportunity to learn from and speak to Columbia alumni.
Alfred Lerner Hall, Satow Room 555 from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM.  Panel

9. CCYA Networking Night: Finance
Tuesday, February 27
Columbia College and SEAS students in the Classes of 2007 and 2008 are
cordially invited to join Columbia College Young Alumni at their
monthly networking night.  Topic this month is finance.  Meet young
alumni currently working in the field and learn more about the world
of finance from experienced professionals.  Reception and panel
discussion at Bank of America, 9 West 57th Street (off the corner of
5th Avenue), 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  Due to strict security enforced by B

10. The Rhodes, Marshall, and Gates-Cambridge

Friday, February 16th

11:00am – 12:30pm

405 Kent

The Rhodes, Marshall, and Gates-Cambridge, some of the most
competitive scholarships, all provide funding for graduate study in
the UK.  The Rhodes funds two years of graduate study at The
University of Oxford.  The Marshall Scholarship funds two years of
study at an UK institution in any discipline.  The Gates-Cambridge,
which also is open to international students, provides funding for
study at the University of Cambridge.  Students interested in applying
to these fellowships should begin working closely with the Fellowships
Office on their applications in their junior year.

11. CUAssassins: Death from Behind!

The Engineering Student Council is proud to present the return of the
mock espionage game, CUAssassins!  For every $20 4-team registration
you'll get a FREE water pistol for each member of your team!  Jack
Bauer won't be able to compete with you once you unleash your fury
with a brightly colored plastic water pistol on an unsuspecting
victim.

But wait!  There's more!  There are CASH prizes totaling HUNDREDS of
dollars to be won!  Register your team this Friday, February 16th or
Saturday, February 17th from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the Lerner ramp
tables (between the campus entrance and the Cinema).  There will be a
mandatory orientation session on Sunday, February 18th at 9 p.m. in
the Arledge Cinema where pizza and pistols will be distributed.
