  Columbia University - University Commencement
     Morningside Campus
     Wednesday May 21st, 2008, 10:30AM - 12PM

Roses and cobblestones -- our final farewell.

Official Description:

The Columbia University Commencement ceremony consists of degree candidate and academic processions; the awarding of University medals and honors; the conferring of honorary degrees in arts, laws, letters and science; a Commencement address by the University president; and the conferring of degrees in course to students from 18 schools, colleges and affiliated institutions.

The Columbia University Commencement is unique in that all degrees are conferred by the president of the University during the ceremony. Though the event is satisfyingly full of pomp and circumstance, it serves a true purpose; no candidate officially graduates until the Commencement ceremony is completed.

With 20,000 participants and guests and 11,000 degree candidates in attendance, the ceremony is an unforgettable grand-scale celebration that appropriately marks the academic achievements of the University community.

The Columbia College Class Day exercise is a ceremony specifically for Columbia College to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2008. It is at Class Day that students hear their names read aloud as they walk across the stage, have their photograph taken, and receive a class pin. The program also includes remarks by a featured speaker, the Dean, and several students, as well as an awards ceremony. No tickets are required for guests, and seating is unlimited. A reception for all students, faculty, and families is hosted by the Dean of Columbia College on Hamilton Lawn immediately following the ceremony.

The event replete with nostalgia.

Official description: This remarkable event features a procession that includes undergraduate degree candidates from Columbia College, the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of General Studies, and Barnard College. School deans, the University chaplain, and faculty and administrators also participate. Some of the highlights of the service include hymns and musical selections performed by student musicians and choirs; and readings, reflections and speeches by students, including a Senior Reflection and a Family Tribute.

The service is coordinated jointly by the Office of the University Chaplain and University Event Management.

The Baccalaureate Service is believed to have originated at Oxford University in 1432 when each bachelor was required to deliver a sermon in Latin as part of his academic exercise. Since the earliest universities in this country were founded primarily to educate ministers, the British practice of the Baccalaureate Service was continued.

The tradition of the Baccalaureate Service at Columbia University began after the move to Morningside Heights in 1897. The Baccalaureate Service is now an interfaith, intercultural service celebrating the completion of each undergraduate's academic career, and is the opening event of Commencement week.

MONTHLY: Grandfather class alumni dinner/lunches

Each Columbia College class has a grandfather class, the class which graduated fifty years before the given class (So ours would be the class of 1958). Interaction with the grandfather class provides a tremendous opportunity for current freshman. We are able to see firsthand the deep pride and class which Columbia instills in its students. Through interesting stories and inspired accounts, we may understand how these remarkable individuals became captains of industry, architects, teachers, lawyers, performers, etc; Additionally, it is never bad to meet an alumni working within your field of interest, as naturally Columbians are always eager to help one another. We would like to give each of you an equal opportunity to attend. If you would like to go, contact us. Each month we will randomly pick six of those of you whom have expressed interest.

Talkbacks with Professors in Your Areas of Interest

As the major declaration deadline for CC approached, CCSC 2008 organized a series of  one-hour talks with professors in popular majors for sophomores only. These talks did not focus on degree requirements, but rather on a discussion of issues that the professors found interesting in their field and where they anticipated the field progressing in the next  decade or so. The idea behind these talks was to give sophomore students an idea of what to expect from their chosen major in the future as well as the opportunity to ask questions to a knowledgeable source.
