Dear Class of 2008,
Welcome to Senior Year! You’ve made it, we’ve made it! The fourth
and final (maybe?) leg of College, whatever that means to you, is
here!
With your newly gained Senior Status come many new possibilities and
responsibilities, one of which is Senior Fund. The Senior Fund is an
important way for our class to leave its mark. Whatever you have
found here at Columbia, be it your professions, passions, mentors
or friends, it was all made possible by gifts from our
predecessors. Consider joining the Fund; consider continuing this
tradition of generosity. The application is attached.
Also, be sure to check out the first item, “The College Years,”
below. There is something to be said about experiencing three years
at Columbia and entering your fourth, and we want to hear what you
have to say. Anonymous or otherwise, send me a memory, a story, a
revelation, a photo, anything you’d like.
Here’s to a great year …
Sincerely,
Neda

1. The College Years…
"During winter break last year, a surprise came to me in the mail at
my home in Massachusetts. My departmental adviser had taken the time
and thought to send me a personal "happy holidays" card. No
automated Hallmark greeting; no computerized signature. In fact,
she wrote me a nice little note about our last meeting and offered
warm wishes for the near future. Some people often gripe about
Columbia being a place where one must do everything themselves and
that no one will reach out to take a personal interest. It was
comforting how such a simple gesture proved that wrong."

2. SENIOR FUND
We invite you to join us in the Class of 2008 Fund effort. This is
an opportunity for each one of us in the class to think about what
Columbia College has given to us--whether it’s the education we’ve
received, the friends we’ve made, the opportunities we’ve been
given or the activities we’ve been involved with--and consider what
we can do as individuals and as a class to give something back in
return. This is a great way for the Class of 2008 to leave its
mark on the College and to make a difference for the students who
will follow us.
The Class of 2008 Fund is a year-long campaign, led by a committee
of students, to educate seniors about the importance of
participation—every gift counts—and the role the Columbia College
Fund plays in our education. It’s hard to believe, but our tuition
covers only two-thirds of the cost of our education. Gifts to the
Columbia College Fund from alumni and friends make up the
difference and provide financial resources to improve undergraduate
financial aid, enhance student services, and strengthen the Core
Curriculum. Our time at Columbia has been supported by alumni who
graduated before us; now it’s our turn to think about those who
will follow.
We are forming a committee of students who will lead our class
effort this year, culminating in the presentation of the class gift
to Dean Quigley at Class Day on May 19, 2008. Class of 2008 Fund
committee members will receive fundraising training, information on
the Columbia College Fund and the Columbia Campaign and have the
opportunity to work with alumni leaders as they work towards their
goals of educating the Class of 2008 about alumni philanthropy,
raising money to support the College, and learning more about the
College’s financial priorities.
If you are interested in working on the Class of 2008 Fund
Committee, please complete the attached application. Applications
are due by Friday, September 28, 2007.

4. CLASS DAY
Interested in planning YOUR Class Day? Do you want to represent
Columbia College students and speak to their interests on the Class
Day Committee? We are looking for a student who will serve as a
point of contact to the Senior Class, attend meetings, and advise
on behalf of the Class of 2008. Please send me an email by
September 16th if you are interested.
