Dear Seniors,

Check out Calvin's message below, have a wonderful weekend, and don't forget: Senior Fund application deadline is tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Neda

PS-Thanks for making the first Lerner Pub amazing.

**************************************************************************************

Hey everyone,

I believe this will be my first formal address to the class of 2008. Hello. I think I'm speaking on behalf of a lot of people that I'm not entirely ready for making this year my last one. But those of you who don't feel the same way....I assure you that it'll be over really soon.

Although it seems almost all of us are Ahmadinejad-'ed out after the events of this past week, I'd like everyone to be aware that we are here to always ready to take on the support role for all students; we want to ensure that as much of this campus as possible remains a safe space for all opinions and beliefs. Therefore, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns with the event, the campus atmosphere leading up to and after the speech, how the administration handled this, or any follow-up programming our council can do to address issues regarding Ahmadinejad.

However, knowing that the world does not revolve around Ahmadinejad, we're also here if you have concerns that are unrelated and beyond what just happened on Monday.

We're here not only to give you a voice within the administration, but also provide you the resources and support you need in case things aren't so great; Again, I make my nostalgic point in that this is our final year; make it your best one if you can and we'll do our best to do the same.

:-)

We got a long newsletter for you today. With all that's been going on this week, please do take a look at the first item; it's taking place tomorrow all over campus and it's really important that the Columbia community be aware of the recent increase in human rights violations in Burma.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Consilience: The Journal of Sustainable Development

Consilience is a new, global, online publication dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary dialogue on sustainable development.

This publication aims to bring students, researchers, professors, and practitioners from a variety of disciplines and geographical regions in direct and useful conversation with each other through an online, academically rigorous medium.

We invite you to submit original and rigorous articles dealing with issues of sustainable development for the Fall 2007 issue.  Articles can take the following forms:

    * Scholarly Articles – Original, research-based articles concerning sustainable development.   Scholarly articles consist of rigorous novel research or analysis of existing and historical work.   Emphasis will be given to interdisciplinary articles.  There is no set length for scholarly articles but most fall between 3,000 and 10,000 words.

    * Field Notes -- Field notes provides a space for students, researchers, professors, and practitioners that have done field work abroad to share their ideas and experiences related to their work.   Generally, field notes are less formal and should be shorter than scholarly articles.

    * Opinion Editorials (Op-Ed) – An opinion piece concerning sustainable development and its attendant challenges, strengths, and structures.

All papers selected for submission will undergo peer review by both the Editorial Board of Consilience and the Advisory Board consisting of graduate students and professors.  All articles should be the work of the authors, though writing done as part of previous class work is welcome.

DEADLINES:

Article Pitch deadline: October 21st, 2007 (only for writers who would like to present their ideas to the editorial board prior to writing the piece)
