Dear Seniors,
I hope midterms are going well! (that will be my only exclamation mark this week since I was called out on my enthusiasm--read below) This week's email is brought to you by your Elected Class Representative, Scott Hughes. Enjoy! (couldn't resist)
Best,
Neda

Seniors,
A special thanks goes out to everyone who was able to attend Lerner
Pub last Thursday. The turnout was strong, especially since it was
midterm/interview season, and it seemed like most people enjoyed the
time away from studying. For those who missed it, don't worry: there
will still be two more Lerner Pubs this semester (more info to come).
As you will see below, the event descriptions this week feature around
600% less exclamation points than Neda's usual fare. But please view
that more as my personal exclamatory shortcomings than as a lack of
merit. By reading below, you can find some quality information on
applying to Senior Week Committee as well as the usual fare of
interesting internship and job opportunities.
And as always, if there is something that this low-level student
government official can do to improve your life, please let me know.
All the best,
Scott

1. The College Years: Magical Edition
From the magic of first walking through the 116th street gates and
skipping class to lounge on the Steps in Spring, to the magic of
strolling amidst the Christmas light studded trees of college walk and
pulling your first all nighter in 209 Butler, to the magic of Wilma's
omelettes and 212 California Grillers, to the magic of the Varsity
Show & Roone Arledge auditorium, to the to the magic of 1020 (yes i
said it) and late night pizza at Pinnacle, to the magic of hearing
PresBo's words broadcast globally and catching a glimpse of Low in
every other blockbuster, to the magic of the movable tooth statue and
the mythic tunnels, to the magic of the passionate, imaginative,
unbelievably talented people who surround you, and to the magic of
being at a school that pushes you to forget about what anyone else
thinks and embrace the real you. That's my Columbia. Simply magical.

2. Dinner with Kelly Gavin CC '06 on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, 7:00
p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
Last year, the Young Alumni Dinner Series debuted and was
well-received. In this program, a small group of students are invited,
as our guests, to an informal dinner with a recent grad at a
restaurant in the neighborhood. This provides a great opportunity for
students to talk with young alumni about life after Columbia and learn
how they are putting that Columbia degree to work.
Kelly graduated with a BA in English from Columbia College and a New
York State Initial Certification in Adolescent Education (Grades 7-12)
through Barnard College. She is in her second year of teaching at
Marble Hill School for International Studies, a small public college
preparatory high school in the Bronx with a focus on international
connections and global awareness. At Marble Hill, Kelly currently
teaches 9th and 11th grade English as well as Dance and Choreography
and serves as the Arts Program Coordinator for the school community.
In the future, she plans on pursuing graduate and doctoral studies in
the field of education in hopes of ultimately preparing future
educators.
Space is limited to six students. If you would like to attend the
dinner, please e-mail Paul Pavlica at pjp2113@columbia.edu by
Wednesday, October 24, at noon. This event is sponsored by Columbia
College Young Alumni and Student and Alumni Programs.

5. Midnight Run
Midnight Run is a volunteer organization dedicated to finding common
ground between housed and homeless. In over 900 "midnight runs" per
year, volunteers from churches, synagogues, schools and other civic
groups distribute food, clothing, blankets and personal care items to
the homeless poor oon the streets of New York City. The late-night
relief efforts create a forum for trust, sharing, understanding and
affection. That human exchange, rather than the exchange of goods, is
the essence of the Midnight Run mission. This year, the 2010 Service
Committee has partnered with Midnight Run to donate the clothing and
time of Columbia students to those in need.
who: All Students!! Freshman to Seniors!
what: Donate Your Lightly Worn Clothing
when: Friday, October 26th 2007 from 12pm-3pm
where: Lerner Ramp
why: It's time to clean out those closets for a good cause!!

Collection is the first step the 2010 Service Committee is taking, and
there will be plenty of other ways to get involved, including going on
the actual run that will take place in the end of November/early
December. If you are interested in getting involved in any way, stop
by to drop off your clothing and talk to us on Friday, October 26th at
