Dear Seniors,

Yes, it's time for another Lerner Pub. Come out and celebrate the start of Fall Break with the rest of the Senior Class TONIGHT.

Also, consider joining the Senior Dinner Committee. What is Senior Dinner? Picture a huge white tent on South Lawn, 1000 Columbia College Seniors, a fully catered dinner, drinks, and Dean Quigley, all on your last day of classes as an undergraduate student. It is one of the greatest nights of Senior year, and the Committee needs YOUR help. Read below and apply.

Finally, how do you feel about "The College Years" section of class emails? If you're enjoying it, show your support by sending me a story. This column is only as successful as you all make it!

Happy Fall Break.

Best,
Neda

1. The College Years ...

Many of the best times that I have had on this campus have been
through my involvement in different campus groups. They have included
the Black Students' Organization, ROOTeD, and even Student Government.
These were activities that not only allowed me to have fun, they also
allowed me to interact with many of the different communities that
exist on this great campus. I began to notice certain disconnects
between the campus communities, seemingly arising out of a lack of
understanding for what it meant to be a part of a community such as ours,
and I realized how much stronger Columbia would be if we could unify.
In an effort to bring these communities together, I became a part of
the Community Principles Initiative, which aimed to establish a mutual
understanding of the values and ideals that must be upheld to live in
a strong and diverse community. I, along with a number of other great
students and administrators have been working on the Community
Building Summit that all students have been invited to attend on
November 9th 2007. This summit will hopefully be one of the first
steps in helping all students have the great Columbia experience that
I have had.

3. The Senior Dinner, which takes place on May 5, 2008, is hosted by Dean
Quigley for all members of the Columbia College Class of 2008. On that
date, all Columbia College seniors are invited for FREE to a formal
catered dinner in a tent on South Lawn. This is one of our last
opportunities to gather together as a Columbia College class to
celebrate our time here. Attendance rates in the past have been near
100% and it is guaranteed to be a night that you and your friends will
never forget, so mark it down on your calendars! You definitely do not
want to miss it.

In order for our Senior Dinner to be a success, we need a committee of
people to help out with a variety of tasks including invitations,
decorations, caterer selection, a picture slide show, and day-of
set-up. If you are interested in working on the preparations that will
bring this incredible night together, please fill out the attached
application and send it to studentalumniprograms@columbia.edu NO LATER
THAN THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15 BY MIDNIGHT. If you have any further
questions, please feel free to contact the Senior Dinner Chairs:
Lauren Abbott (lea2107) and Chris Tortoriello
(crt2104).

4. WANTED: YEARBOOK EDITOR-IN-CHIEF - OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD AND CREATE A LASTING MEMORY OF YOUR TIME AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY CONTACT DAVID MILCH ( dm2422@columbia.edu).

Earn a stipend and learn professional skills while creating a publication that will provide memories for many years to come. The ideal candidate will be a CC or SEAS Senior and will have some publication experience. If interested contact, David Milch ( dm2422@columbia.edu) in the SDA Office.

Juliet Berman, last year's Editor put together her thoughts on the position:

When I signed on to be Editor-in-Chief of the Columbia yearbook, I had no idea what I was getting into. I had a strong background in journalism and a vague notion that I wanted to leave some sort of legacy behind when I graduated in May. What I didn't realize at the time was that this 400 page book did not simply create itself, and that there was no one in charge to tell me what to do. If it was going to happen, I had to make it happen. This meant everything from finding a staff to choosing the content to scheduling the senior portraits. The Editor must have strong leadership skills, layout proficiency (preferably on Adobe InDesign), and experience working with the Columbia administration and student government. But being Editor-in-Chief of the Columbian yearbook requires more than a knowledge of yearbook journalism, it requires a passion for Columbia and the important role that is has played in the students who pass within its gates. Long after graduation, when college is becoming a distant memory, the Columbian yearbook will serve as an important record of the four years you spent at Columbia--the classes you took, the friends you had, the places that were special to you. It's up to the Editor to find the pulse of the 2008 class and translate it into 400 pages of pictures and words. It sounds like a daunting task and it is, but I promise you, when the final result is in your hands, it will all be worth it.

6. The Columbia chapter of Engineers Without Borders has entered in a competition called "Grab Life, Give Life" that Dodge is sponsoring, where we could potentially win $20K. The idea is for colleges to have "charity events" and compete to see who can get the most votes from the greater college community. Even though the name of the organization is Engineers Without Borders, there are plenty of members in the group from the college, and the general goal of its various projects are sustainable development - something we can all get behind! Also, it's basically a popularity contest - and wouldn't it be great to have a part making our SEAS counterparts nationally popular??

In order to vote, you need to register onto the site and then click and vote for our project. Both links are below...

Here's the link to register: http://www.grablifegivelife.com/user/signup

And here's the link to vote for CU EWB: http://grablifegivelife.com/contest/viewcandidate/338

*make sure to register with your .edu email addresses, because the voting is open to college students ONLY!*

You get to vote once a day, so don't forget to keep voting! If we're (somehow) the first "event" to make it to 20,000 votes... we get the $20K. Email all of your friends (seriously, it's a popularity contest). Also, remember: it's open to ALL college students, so be sure to hit up your friends from home!
