Dear Seniors,

I apologize for the insanely long email, but we have lots of items to keep your calendar packed this week. Midnight Mania (my favorite event of the Fall) is THIS THURSDAY! Follow that up with a double-header from our Women's and Men's Basketball Teams on Friday night. Follow that up with Casino Night (think: drinks, hors d'oeuvres, a live jazz band, and thousands of dollars worth of prizes).

If that's not enough for you, come to our CCSC meeting on Sunday evening. We want to know what is important to you, and how we can help, given the recent events on our campus. We are devoting our meeting to YOU and YOUR CONCERNS. If you are unable to attend but would like to be involved in the discussions, please let me know.

Also, get your beauty sleep this week: next week are SENIOR PORTRAITS (read below for details).

Have a wonderful three-day week.

Best,
Neda

PS-Senior Fund Release Party is less than a month away. More details to follow ...

1. The College Years ...

After graduation, we will remain Lions for life. Though Columbia may not be best know for our sports teams, athletics has been an integral part of my experience here. We have a long and storied history of promoting competition, athleticism, skill and victory among both our student athletes and the student body at large. I became a part of this tradition beginning my freshman year, when I joined the cheerleading team. It would be boring to many of you if I were to describe how important cheerleading was to me and what I learned and experienced as a member of the squad for three years, plus I could never encompass it in a mere paragraph. Instead, I would like to remind you that it is even more important that the student body show enthusiasm and support for our teams than the cheerleaders. We were, and remain, a visible and vocal minority.

The athletes at Columbia deserve respect and recognition not only for the amount of time they put into their sports (more than you or I realize) and for the heavy course loads that they take, but they also deserve our respect for the courage they show in competing week after week with very little support from the student body, rather they are forced to put up with our indignation and criticism. This week presents an ideal opportunity for the student body, and especially the seniors (it is our last chance to have an excuse to paint ourselves blue and get "crazy" at a game) to show support not only for our student athletes but also for what our student athletes represent each and everytime they don their uniform: Columbia University. I hope you will realize that athletics are much more than a game, they are a means of building community and cohesion at a school that is extremely diverse. I hope you will seize this opportunity this week and attend Midnight Mania on Thursday, November 8 at 8:30 pm and return to Levien
Gymnasium on Friday for the kick off to Basketball season, a nationally televised double-header: men's and women's basketball teams start their season this Friday! Go Lions!!

7. CCSC 08 presents ... SENIOR DINNER

The Senior Dinner, which takes place on May 5, 2008, is hosted by Dean
Quigley for all members of the Columbia College Class of 2008. On that
date, all Columbia College seniors are invited for FREE to a formal
catered dinner in a tent on South Lawn. This is one of our last
opportunities to gather together as a Columbia College class to
celebrate our time here. Attendance rates in the past have been near
100% and it is guaranteed to be a night that you and your friends will
never forget, so mark it down on your calendars! You definitely do not
want to miss it.

In order for our Senior Dinner to be a success, we need a committee of
people to help out with a variety of tasks including invitations,
decorations, caterer selection, a picture slideshow, and day-of
set-up. If you are interested in working on the preparations that will
bring this incredible night together, please fill out the attached
application and send it to studentalumniprograms@columbia.edu NO LATER
THAN THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15 BY MIDNIGHT. If you have any further
