Dear Seniors,
So it appears that in this fall semester alone, our campus will have experienced enough controversy to fill the average college student's four years. The current situation on campus presents us each with the opportunity to stand up for our Columbia community. Whatever that may mean to you individually, and whether or not you agree with the student protests or demands, be a true Columbia College Senior, and make that decision a fully-informed one.
This is not the time to be apathetic, nor is it the time to be misinformed, or completely uninformed. I encourage you to browse some of the links below to gain a deeper understanding of what your peers are fighting for. At the end of the day, whether or not you agree with any or all of the demands, and whether or not you agree with the tactics, these are students who care enough about our school to fight for change.

In the future, if there is any way that CCSC can better serve you as a hub of information, or if there is information that you would like me to include in a future class email, please let me know.
Finally, on a completely different note, who would you like to hear speak at YOUR Class Day? If there are any Columbia College affiliates who you would be proud to share the stage with in May, please email [email protected] .
Best,
Neda

1. The College Years ...
I was recently accepted into Columbia when my ambivalence in staying in New York City came through; Columbia was only 20 or so blocks north of my high school, so why should I stay another 4 years? Would my parents go and check up on me everyday? Oh dear god.
But when I went to Days on Campus, I was introduced to a world that I knew only through hearsay and low-budget chickflicks. From underage partying at AmCafe back when it was a karaoke dive bar to crashing in a random Carman double with newfound friends I had just met that night to the next morning of sitting on our urban beach and taking in the view...I knew I would be insane to give up this place.
But insanity is relative. In all my 4 years here, Columbia has never seen a quiet moment. And if I learned anything from my time in working with different groups of people is that there exists diversity of communities who similarly love Columbia in the brief time that they're here. They may care in ways other people would oppose, but throwing rocks at one another will never get shit done. We're all either incensed, passionate, or completely apathetic to what has been going on in recent events, but we can't deny how much we can learn from a campus that is no stranger to controversy. We're living in a world that we probably couldn't find back in high school and may never find beyond these gates after May.
Now before you vomit at what seems to belong in the Columbia viewbook rather than a senior class e-mail, let's all appreciate what we have before it's gone. It's still a hell a lot more interesting than high school.

4. CCSC 08 presents ... SENIOR DINNER
The Senior Dinner, which takes place on May 5, 2008, is hosted by Dean Quigley for all members of the Columbia College Class of 2008. On that date, all Columbia College seniors are invited for FREE to a formal catered dinner in a tent on South Lawn. This is one of our last opportunities to gather together as a Columbia College class to celebrate our time here. Attendance rates in the past have been near 100% and it is guaranteed to be a night that you and your friends will never forget, so mark it down on your calendars! You definitely do not want to miss it.
In order for our Senior Dinner to be a success, we need a committee of people to help out with a variety of tasks including invitations, decorations, caterer selection, a picture slideshow, and day-of set-up. If you are interested in working on the preparations that will bring this incredible night together, please fill out the attached
application and send it to [email protected] NO LATER THAN THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15 BY MIDNIGHT. If you have any further

10. E-Recycling @ Columbia
Old electronic equipment, or "e-waste", is some of the most pernicious
stuff to dispose of. If it ends up in landfills, it leaches toxic
chemicals into the soil (the average CRT monitor contains, among other
things, 7 pounds of lead). Many e-waste "recycling" programs,
meanwhile, ship it to Asia or Africa, where lowest-wage workers take
it apart and expose themselves daily to these same chemicals.
But fret no more: This weekend, Scientists and Engineers for a Better
Society (SEBS) and the Earth Coalition (EarthCo) are coordinating an
e-waste recycling drop off with the Lower East Side Ecology Center at
Columbia. The collected materials will be recycled safely efficiently
at a facility in New Jersey.
What: Recycle your unwanted electronics:
Computers, monitors, printers, all peripherials (cables, mice,
keyboards,printers, scanners, etc.)
TV's, VCR's, cd/dvd players, etc
Cell phones
Audio-visual (cameras, camcorder, etc)
Media - CDs, floppies, etc
When: Saturday, November 10 10 am - 4 pm
Sunday, November 11 10 am - 4 pm
Monday, November 12 4 pm - 7 pm
Event is rain or shine!
Where: Broadway between 115th & 116th Streets
If you are interested in helping out with community outreach and
e-waste collection, please send an email to [email protected] by
Friday, Nov. 9th. For more information on e-waste recycling, please
contact the Lower East Side Ecology Center, [email protected]
or call 212.477.4022
