Dear Seniors,

Please join me in congratulating fellow Seniors George Olive and Emma Kaufman on winning Marshall scholarships last week, and George and Jason Bello on winning Rhodes scholarships this past weekend! Read up on there success: http://www.columbiaspectator.com/?q=node/28184, and check out "The College Years" piece submitted by George.

Don't forget to attend the Apply for Your Degree event tonight (come to apply for your diploma, have some Texas Rotisserie for dinner, and catch up with Seniors before Thanksgiving break). Also read below about the Senior Fund Kick-Off Party (date has been changed to Wednesday the 28th), and a free concert and reception at Carnegie Hall.

Following the break, I will have more information for students interested in events to help our campus move forward from the past two weeks. In the meantime, please email me with any questions or concerns that you have.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!

Best,
Neda

1. The College Years ...
For me, Columbia will always be those perfect two weeks in April and September that come at the seasonal transitions—that ephemeral fortnight when the weather is perfect for mixing up a thermos of G&Ts and sitting on the south lawn. I can't help but pity the far-flung pre-frosh who visit during those intervals, though I reserve the most sympathy for those helpless lads whose campus tours fall on The First Day of Skirts (no explanation necessary.) "This place is wonderful!" they must think. And just like that, they might end up here. Such would be a fitting beginning.
A Columbia undergraduate education is a peculiar thing, and the most important moments of mine were nearly all the results of chance meetings, offhand comments, and other assorted chaos. It is a distortion to imagine college as some well-ordered path from clueless freshman to poised, educated Adult; it takes a little more fortitude to see it for what it is—an alarmingly random walk that somehow led most of us somewhere irreplaceable and invaluable. We can hardly imagine anything other than this major, these friends, and these memories. I asked Sunil Gulati to write me a letter of recommendation for a (rather trivial) conference one summer. He did so, and I joined the mob at the podium after one of his Principals lectures to thank him. "Don't mention it," he said distractedly. "We'll write you a real one when you apply for the Rhodes someday." The thought had never crossed my mind before. I think it's fitting that my life was changed by a casually encouraging comment from a distracted but excellent Columbia professor.
One last thing: I will probably never have the chance to address the class again, so I hope you'll permit me a small paragraph in the past tense though the year is far from over. It has been a privilege to attend Columbia with all of you. You have taught me the most important thing I've learned here—to appreciate the hundreds of ways a person can be smart. Thank you for that. -George Olive
