Fellow members of the Columbia University community:

We have arrived at our 249th academic year at Columbia University, and I am honored to be a part of this remarkable institution. Unfortunately, the first occasion for me to address the community is a somber one. On September 11, 2002 we will join our neighbors in New York City and around the world in remembrance of the tragedies of one year ago in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.

In observance of the anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, we will hold a brief ceremony on the steps of Low Plaza. The ceremony will take place from 8:40 A.M. to approximately 9:15 A.M. Following the sounding of the bells and a city-wide moment of silence, the names of the 107 Columbia University alumni, family members, and friends who lost their lives on September 11 will be recited.

Please contact Barbara Busch in the Office of Presidential Events if you are aware of any individuals whose names should be added to the morning's reading. She may be reached at (212) 870-2529 or bhb2012@columbia.edu. For updated information and listings of additional events, please continue to consult this web site.

I greatly appreciate your support of this effort.

With warm wishes,
Lee C. Bollinger
