John L. Martin; Studied Gay Behavior, AIDS Bereavement


John L. Martin, 38, a Columbia University professor whose AIDS research focused on the sexual behavior of gay men and the presence of chronic bereavement in their lives brought on by the fatal disease. Martin, who maintained homes in Los Angeles and New York City, conducted ongoing studies of hundreds of gay men in Manhattan. The data was published in more than 20 papers in professional journals. His work brought him an achievement award from the American Psychological Assn. in 1990 and a research grant last year from the National Institute of Mental Health. In Los Angeles on Friday of AIDS.
