Martin M. Schaeffer, Theater Critic, 50


Martin M. Schaeffer, a theater and cabaret critic for Variety and other publications, died on Wednesday at Cabrini Hospice in Manhattan. He was 50. The cause was AIDS, said Brian Bradley, a friend.

Mr. Schaeffer was a nightclub critic for Variety from 1988 to 1991 and served as co-host and critic for the television show "Tomorrow, Tonight Live!" on Manhattan Cable from 1985 to 1991. He was also an Off Broadway critic for The Hollywood Reporter and a critic and feature writer for Back Stage, the entertainment trade paper. He is survived by his companion, Lance Geshwind of Manhattan.
