RE-URBANIZATION

THE FABRIC FOR IMAGINATION

Site Location: Port Authority Bus Terminal,

George Washington Bridge

The Bus Terminal, which was built in 1963 was attending a big number of trips coming to New York City from different parts of the Country, representing an important construction for modern architecture of that decade, as it stands on top of the Trans Manhattan Expressway, dealing with a high quantity of movement for people, cars, buses and trucks.
In the present, the building seems to be in a chaotic state of abandonment, it does not use its full original operation capacity, only at some rush hours the terminal is partially busy, serving mainly routes for people living in New Jersey and working in Manhattan and vice versa, the building has somehow turned from a big regional transportation hub into a suburban area connector for the city. As a result of this lack of people movement, big areas originally thought for retail, shops and storage are now without any use, empty and closed.
Some other areas still in use like the bets place where some gamblers and vicious people gather everyday, giving the terminal a special negative ambiance.
A big amount of money is yearly spent for maintenance in this building, it clearly seems to be it has become a big dead weight for the New York Port Authority.
