About

Columbia Japan Society is an undergraduate organization of Columbia University, run by and composed entirely of students. We are dually recognized by the University under the Activities Board of Columbia and the Student Governing Association. Our purpose is to introduce and spread aspects of Japanese culture to the Columbia community, bridging the gap between East and West.

We use a variety of food-related events, arts and media showcasing, and educational lectures to foster an appreciation for the nation’s unique blend of tradition and modernity. While Matsuri is our largest effort during the year, we hold several other events, including Bento Night. The organizational structure consists of a Board of around 20 students who plan all events and coordinate activities. Our mailing list reaches over 500 general body members who attend our events and support our efforts.

Bento Night

Come to Columbia Japan Society’s Bento Night, held annually during the fall semester! Bento Night is divided into two hour-long sessions during which students can decorate their own personal bento while enjoying performances by student groups such as CU Pops, CU Taiko, and CU Gagaku. The event is all-you-can-eat for a limited ticketed price. Each year hosts a different, unique theme so keep a look out on our Facebook page for more information!

Matsuri

Columbia Japan Society is excited to bring you Matsuri, our annual spring festival held on Low Plaza! Our annual Matsuri is an opportunity for all to experience what a Japanese festival is like right here in NYC! There will be plenty of Japanese festival foods, such as Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki, Curry, and much, much more! While enjoying your food, you’ll be able to watch performances by student groups such as CU Pops, Aikido, and CU Taiko. The event is enjoyable for both students and families alike, as there will be various activities booths featuring crafts such as Origami and face-painting, as well as vendors selling traditional Japanese crafts. Before you leave, don’t forget to take a picture with friends in front of our red Torii gate. Whatever you decide to do at Matsuri, we guarantee you will have an exciting cultural experience!
