Columbia Japan Society is an undergraduate organization of Columbia University, run by and composed entirely of students. We are dually recognized by the University under the Activities Board of Columbia and the Student Governing Association. Our purpose is to introduce and spread aspects of Japanese culture to the Columbia community, bridging the gap between East and West.

We use a variety of food-related events, arts and media showcasing, and educational lectures to foster an appreciation for the nation’s unique blend of tradition and modernity. While Matsuri is our largest effort during the year, we hold several other events, including Sushi Night. The organizational structure consists of a Board of around 20 students who plan all events and coordinate activities. Our mailing list reaches over 500 general body members who attend our events and support our efforts.

Columbia Japan Society is excited to bring you Matsuri: the annual Japanese spring festival on Low Plaza that is sure to provide fun and entertainment for all!
Comu on board and start your afternoon with some delicious Japanese food: sushi, takoyaki, hibachi, curry--pick your favorite! Meanwhile watch some amazing performances ranging from Japanese gypsy rock to traditional taiko drumming to animated J-pop bands featured on the stage.
Have you ever wanted a pet goldfish? Of course you have! Master the goldfish scooping pool, then try your artistic hand at lantern decorating, origami, and anime drawing booths. You'll just have to come and see what other activities we have in store! Commemorate the day with a beautiful gift from the Japanese vendors and a photo of you and your friends wearing traditional Japanese yukata by the Torii gate.
Whatever you decide to do at Matsuri, we guarantee you will have an exciting cultural experience!
