Missing or Brittle Items

OVERVIEW

Use the procedures on the following pages in conjunction with the replacement of missing and brittle volumes procedure found in the CUL Preservation Handbook. A thorough working knowledge of that procedure is required. When following the Preservation procedure, selectors can make a number of decisions regarding missing or brittle items. Use the procedures on the following pages if the decision is to replace or to microfilm.

Perform the CLIO maintenance activities outlined in the procedures on the following pages after the initial steps outlined in the Preservation procedure have been completed.

The steps in the Preservation procedure are:

III.A. Identification of brittle and missing items

III.B. Quick bibliographic search

III.C. Selector review

III.D. Bibliographic search (primarily GL/B collection maintenance)

Depending on staff and bibliographic tools available, the extent of the bibliographic search described in the Preservation procedure will vary in departments. However, all departments are expected to search the asterisked items in Section C of the D115.
