Most libraries screen brittle volumes when they past through the circulation process. The CUL Preservation Handbook decribes how to identify brittle items and also gives a detailed explanation on how to fill out the Brittle Serials Replacement Worksheet (D115s) mentioned below.
If a significant portion of the set/serial is brittle and/or damaged, search for replacement. If none is available, create microfilm. If only a few volumes are brittle and/or damaged, and the rest of the serial/set is in acceptable condition, the options include searching for replacements for the brittle volumes only, making preservation photocopies of the brittle volumes only, creating preservation cases for the brittle volumes and reshelving, and discarding this brittle volume.
For the following procedures, it is assumed that the library has completed the appropriate search (i.e. other copies, editions) and has made the decision to replace the volume. Any volume which is not replaced should be withdrawn and/or follow local procedures. (For follow-up on this procedure, see DCMM 317 or DCMM 325)
If the volume is several years old, it is usually difficult to obtain a replacement copy through the vendor. Photocopying, microfilming, or creating preservation cases will be other alternatives.
