Mosis Equipment & Software Configuration
[an error occurred while processing this directive] Please
review Procedures for
Requesting New Equipment before initiating an order. Note that
the basic MOSIS package does not include either a printer or furniture,
unless specifically budgeted for.
HARDWARE
SOFTWARE
The following software is included with newly installed machines, as of 10/99.
GUIDELINES
- Desktop. The MOSIS desktop layout and content is static and will
revert to the default whenever the machine is rebooted.
- Maintenance. LSO normally upgrades software and fixes MOSIS problems
over the network; this may require users to leave their machines on overnight
and to reboot to install new services.
- Non-CUL Software. Non-CUL software may only be installed on MOSIS
machines with LSO approval and the approval of the relevant Division Chief.
Support and maintenance of any such software is solely the responsibility
of the user or divisional staff.
- Non-CUL Software Shortcuts. Non-MOSIS software installed on local
MOSIS machines is accessible via shortcuts within "My Personal Folder"
rather than directly on the desktop.
- Shared Storage. Shared disk storage ("F:\Shared") on the
Novell server is for temporary purposes only, e.g., for transferring files
to other staff. If a user or department requires longer term storage or larger
amounts of storage, please submit a Request for new LSO Support explaining
the circumstances.
- Backup Service. Automated backup is available on request. This service
backs up files stored in the local c:\data directory (only), which is the
default data directory for MOSIS machines as configured.
- Networked Faxing. Castelle FaxPress is a networked application that
allows staff to send documents on the local MOSIS machine as faxes, e.g.,
from MS Office. It cannot be used to receive faxes at the present time. It
is for use only for official library business, and the purpose of each fax
must be annotated in the "Log Reference" field.
- Networked Printing. Networked printing is available if the office
or department has a network connected, Novell-based shared printer. Such printers
require their own network connection and Ethernet card before they can be
used for shared, Novell-based printing.
UPGRADE STRATEGY
- LSO will upgrade current MOSIS users to new version of MS Office, Eudora,
etc., on an as-requested / as-needed basis. Systematic upgrades of application
software are not usually feasible.
- No immediate move to Windows 98 is anticipated at the present time; ideally,
we will wait until Windows 2000 release until upgrading. No funds have been
budgeted by the Libraries yet for such upgrades.
SUGGESTIONS / REQUESTS FOR NEW SOFTWARE
- Suggestions for adding software applications to the basic MOSIS platform
should be forwarded to: Jeff Rosedale, Chair, Workstation Advisory Group.
- Requests to install approved software on existing machines should be forwarded
via the Request for New LSO Support form on SWIFT at:
