Path: Digital Library Projects  : Digital Scriptorium : TEI-MS tasks
Latest version of this document: 10/7/02

The following outline shows possible analysis, development and assessment tasks related to the TEI-MS / traditional descriptive cataloging component of Digital Scriptorium.  These tasks should, if possible, be accomplished over the next six months both to provide web access to the Huntington's cataloging but also to provide the technology testing and assessment necessary for further project planning.
Phase 1
  1. TEI-MS DTD:  Review & test current version of new DTD for manuscript description (tei-ms.dtd)

  2. HEH Catalog: Review and edit XML version of HEH two-volume set as needed to conform to TEI-MS DTD

  3. HTML Presentation #1: Write XSLT scripts to create basic HTML version of text that incorporates image links for HEH digital images; start with existing printed texts as display spec.

  4. HTML Presentation #2: Work with DS curators to develop enhanced display spec; with features such as:

    • flexible navgation
    • internal URL links for references
    • separate browsable indexes / concordances, e.g., by shelfmark, script, title, place of origin

Write additional XSLT scripts to create enhanced HTML version of text.

Phase 2
  1. Crosswalks: Create detailed crosswalk / data element map between the Access format, the TEI-MS format, and USMARC

  2. Merge to TEI-MS: Write scripts / programs to convert and merge data from Access & HEH into TEI-MS format

  3. Merge to MS Access: Write scripts / programs to convert and merge data from HEH into Access

  4. Assessment: Prepare written assessment of the pros and cons of creating, merging, managing Digital Scriptorium metadata in the tested formats.

  5. HTML Presentation #3: Regenerate HTML presentations (created in 1.4 above) using merged Access & TEI-MS files.

Phase 3
  1. Indexing Requirements. Working with DS curators and technical advisers, develop requirements and specifications for XPAT-type indexing and result display of merged TEI-MS & Access file.

  2. Load Files into XPAT. Process and load composite TEI-MS file onto Columbia's DLXS / XPAT server.

  3. Configure & Test. Configure and test indexing, retrieval and display according to specifications developed above.

  4. HTML Presentation #4: Create integrated HTML display and XPAT index search and retrieval functionality.
