Dramatic Museum Realia (Puppets, Masks, Set Models).
The project began in 2008 and was funded in part by a grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation. It was completed in March 2011 and entailed, for the first time, integrating descriptions and links of digital content -- scans of 487 puppets, 128 masks and 13 set models from the Brander Matthews Dramatic Museum -- into our online finding aid publishing system.
It also brought to bear our Omeka exhibition platform for the first time as a component of a special collections digital project. Another key aspect of this project was the provision of a mechanism on the Omeka site for external users to provide feedback on the content, to help identify and catalog it. An assessment of the value of this commenting effort is still to come. Digitization was done in-house, with metadata supplied by the RBML curator.
The finding aid for the Dramatic Museum puppets and masks isavailable through Columbia’s new Archival Collections Portal (http://findingaids.cul.columbia.edu/ead/nnc-rb/ldpd_7818783/summary) providing easy access to primary source materials across the Columbia Libraries’ system.
There are 446 puppets, and 138 masks, each of which will have a single image.
The images are hosted on our Omeka platform. Key to this project, too, was providing a mechanism on the site for users to provide feedback on the content, to help identify and catalog it.
