9XX FIELDS OTHER THAN 965
Bibliographic Record Procedures
BACKGROUND
This document inventories local fields, other than 965, added as part of
Columbia
processing. All 9XX fields mentioned in this document should remain in
the bibliographic record. It should be noted that many other non-Columbia
9XX fields
occur in bibliographic records as a result of shared cataloging. These
9XX fields are routinely ignored.
- 956
When a new electronic resource is cataloged, LSO creates persistent URLs (URNs) for display in the library's OPAC and in Web
presentations of electronic resources.
Example:
956/1:40: |u http://www.columbia.edu/cgi-bin/cul/resolve?ATG6790
For information on maintenance of the 956 field (especially for RTI
titles) see ERCM014
Record overlay will NOT delete the 956 field.
- 959
Creates a url-like link to the Offsite Request
Service.
As items are checked in at RECAP each day, barcodes are sent back to LSO
who extracts the CLIO ID from the item record and automatically generates
a url in the bib record pointing to the Offsite Request System. If a
patron clicks on the link, a form will be created on the fly to initiate
retrieval of the item.
Example:
959/1:4 : |u http://www.columbia.edu/cgi-bin/cul/offsite?ART3185 |z
Offsite Request Key: ART3185
Record overlay will NOT delete the 959 field, but a BOVL command in
CLIO will. As a rule, do not delete
the 959 field when processing added copies or added volumes. If, however,
recataloging or transfer necessitates the removal of a 959 field, consult
a supervisor.
- 965
values indicate the origin of a record, e.g., BATCH.
- 966
The 966 field contains genre terms for electronic resources, e.g., EJ for
an electronic journal. 966 is not preserved in record overlay and must be
reinput to facilitate record extract for the MMF (Master Metadata File).
- 990
The 990 field was used by central technical services until 1997 to
record the initials of a selector of
a printed monograph. The field is searchable and was used primarily by
Area Studies selectors to create lists of newly acquired materials.
Area Studies continues to use the field for some categories of backlog
processing.
The Music Library uses 990 to record whether an item is a score (msc) or a
recording (msr). This allows users to limit searches by format.
The 990 field is used to record the initials of the ERC (Electronic
Resources Coordinator) for a free resource which lacks an OPR.
Examples:
990 fhu
990 msc
