lOO The Ptolemies

Dr Hultzsch speaks of finding a solitary silver
coin of the days of Ptolemy Soter in the Bangalore
bazaar 1. The love-story, the progenitor of the
modern novel, introduced to the West by Chares
of Mitylene, may be perhaps considered an indirect
product of Alexandrian influence, as it appears
first in Alexandrian literature.
