12   The Mutual Life Insurance Company.

involving suits amounted to only $30,000,

Every legitimate claim has been prompt¬
ly paid and the spirit of equity has marked
every transaction of the Company.

The only instances where the Company
has contested a claim has been where mani¬
fest fraud was attempted, and as will be
seen by referring to the work of the legal
department, in 1886 was but -fg-V of one
per cent, of the total sum paid to policy¬
holders.

The financial results achieved by policy¬
holders in the Mutual Life, as the contracts
mature, have attracted much attention,
standing as they do unequalled in the his¬
tory of Life Insurance, either in the United
States or abroad. Many examples have
appeared in The Weekly Statement, pub¬
lished by the Company, showing the condi¬
tion of existing policies One of these is
reproduced here to illustrate the remark¬
able results referred to. This was issued
