the publisher, and made quite a stir about his strong objection to
the dedication. He had talked about " 'highly placed personages'
at St James's Palace on whom he was in waiting, . . . generally
tried to ride about three horses at once" and in several ways war¬
ranted Richards's description of him as "rather a donkey." The
publisher pointed out the difficulty and cost of removing the dedi-
