Before the Glory Fades 29
to this school of painting is very much needed. It should have many
reproductions and a thorough discussion of the iconography as
well as the historical and religious background. Further, there
should be a comparison of the art styles and techniques of different
periods, of different regions in Sri Lanka, of neighboring countries
which have influenced Sinhalese work, and of the different artists
in so far as they arc known. It is likely that L. T. P. A'lanjusri, with
his immense archive documenting the frescoes, and his broad
scholarship, would have much to contribute to such an under¬
taking.
