Reflecting on the writing and reception of Can You Forgive
Her? in An Autobiography, almost twenty years after the inci¬
dent, Trollope recalls: "Then there came to me a letter from a
distinguished dignitary of our Church, a man whom all men hon¬
oured, treating me with severity for what I was doing." TroUope's
memory is quite accurate as he recalls that to his correspondent's
demand if "a wife contemplating adultery was a character fit for
