Cerf:

Well, Phyllis‘mother had a habit of getting married to various gentlemen so Phyllis fell under the influence of Lela and Ginger, whom she adored, and they were like sisters. And they still are. They don't bother with each other when they're not together, but when they meet there's a great bond.

Q:

They pick up where they left off.

Cerf:

Yes. And they're mad about each other, but ten minutes later they're back right where they were as kids--squabbling with each other. I hear them squabbling upstairs and fighting like girls and their voices become little girls‘voices. And they absolutely adore each other. Ginger's an irresistible person.

Anyway...

Q:

You started dating.

Cerf:

Yes. I was telling you Phyllis‘story. Ginger took her out to Hollywood when she made her success, and Phyllis became sort of a baby starlet and was in several pictures. But she was also a very smart girl, and even then she realized that she was getting parts because she was Ginger's kid cousin, not because she had any great talent of her own. And she just didn't like being an actress. It wasn't her kind of life. She isn't that kind of a girl. But she became great friends with a whole group of kids at that time--Jinx Falkenberg,
