Q:

That's what made them so successful.

Cerf:

That's what made them so wonderful.

Then the Grolier Club started this Beginner Book series, which has been fabulous. The royalties from the Grolier Club... well, there has never been anything like it.

Q:

Today, I just want to get it on the tape that Phyllis works every day, doesn't she?

Cerf:

She has an office at Random House. And, with these Step-Up Books, heaven help the authors when they sign up. They don't know what they're in for, but they always end up loving Phyllis...fighting with her over every page, but loving her.

For instance, Mrs. Jerome Weidman, Peggy Weidman, has done a couple of these books. Nancy White, Teddy White's wife, has done a few, too. Phyllis meets people who seem to be interested and bags them. They don't realize that Phyllis will fight with them for three days over a word that she wants taken out. They always end up giving in.

Q:

Well, she has the expertise, too.

Cerf:

We've named her the General. She gets quite angry at us. Last year, the boys and I hired a bugler and presented her with four stars.

Q:

Well, does she work every day from nine to five?
