B.C.S.
Interview #11
Interviewee: Bennett Cerf
Interviewer: Robbin Hawkins
New York City
January 8, 1968

Q:

Now, you thought we might...

Cerf:

I want to talk about William Saroyan if I haven't done it.

Q:

I'll stop you if you have.

Cerf:

How we met him through the fact that we published Story Magazine. Did I tell you about Story Magazine bringing people over from Majorca?

Q:

Refresh my mind. Maybe you did. Maybe you didn't. Maybe I read about it.

Cerf:

They published a magazine. Whit Burnett and his wife had been on the Paris Herald for a long time and then they went to Majorca and started Story Magazine. They had to stop publishing it there because they had no “w's.” Their printer didn't have a “w” in his shop! So, Donald Klopfer and myself, with Harry Scherman of the Book-of-the- Month Club, financed their move to New York.

Q:

Book-of-the-Month too--how did that get involved? Did you call them up?
