Look what he has done with Atheneum, which is amazing.
Alfred was wrong. The Knopf alumni association is all over the publishing business...people who had worked for Knopf and couldn't stand it because Alfred is a loner. His wife was more dictatorial. They spent their years fighting with each other and developing a magnificent publishing business. That's the funny part of it, with all of his quirks and his inability to keep good editors because he would override them all of the time--the Knopf list is the mark of a wonderful, distinguished publisher. He's one of the great ones of our time--maybe the greatest.
