Then we got help from two different sources. The Book-of-the-Month Club bought the book club rights the year before the thing came out for a very handsome advance.

The firm was. We have maintained a close friendship with the Book-of-the-Month Club.
Well you must have alerted them to what was going on.
Everybody knew what we were up to, particularly the Webster-Merriam people. We got a frantic note, saying that their dictionary was perfect and nobody else had a chance against them. Of course the name Webster is not copyright. Obviously Mr. Webster has been dead for quite a few years. There is nothing to stop you or anybody else from using
