time that it came out, of course, we were part of RCA so there was never any case about worrying where the money was coming from.

Q:

Why do you think...?

Cerf:

Then we got help from two different sources. The Book-of-the-Month Club bought the book club rights the year before the thing came out for a very handsome advance.

Q:

Were you instrumental in having them buy it?

Cerf:

Oh, sure. Do you mean personally?

Q:

Yes.

Cerf:

The firm was. We have maintained a close friendship with the Book-of-the-Month Club.

Q:

Well you must have alerted them to what was going on.

Cerf:

Everybody knew what we were up to, particularly the Webster-Merriam people. We got a frantic note, saying that their dictionary was perfect and nobody else had a chance against them. Of course the name Webster is not copyright. Obviously Mr. Webster has been dead for quite a few years. There is nothing to stop you or anybody else from using
